A Thrilling Adventure
January 15, 1889The life of a professional diver must be classed as an extra hazardous risk by the life insurance companies. Only the other day the air tube of a poor-fellow, who was a t work upon the wreck of a sunken steamer off the Rockaway Reach, became entangled and he was suffocated to dean in an instant. A similar accident happened on the same day this to the air hose of a diver in the Schuylkill river, who was drawn to the surface, however, before the vital spark had entirely gone out. And comes the story from New Zealand, of a content under water of a diver with an enormous octopus. In this case the sub marine worker, man named Gowan, was employed to get some blocks of stone in position at the base of stone pillars supporting a bridge of Wellington. He was busily engaged when the sea monster clasped one of its long tentacles around his back and threw another about the pillar. The diver made frantic efforts to free himself from the vice-like grip o the polyp, but the more he fought the tighter he was held. Finally the poor diver observed that the octopus had released its hold upon the pillar. He at once gave the signal to haul him up. This was done and when he reached the surface the monster was still clinging to his back. It was captured and powerful tentacles proved to be ninefeet length. A human being might seek forever without finding amore thrilling adventure than that which befell Mr.Gowall.
