San Francisco, April 28.—Tom Avery a well-known local prize-fighter, fell late Friday night in the ring during a sparring exhibition with Ed Cuffe, a recent arrival from the East. It was a six-round contest and in the fourth round Avery fell unconscious to the floor, where he expired in a few minutes. A physician said death was due to heart failure, caused by over exertion. Cuffe was arrested.
A brutal fight in which George Fulljames is killed. Terminated Fatally.
A Prize fight was arranged Friday night between George Fulljames, of Winnipeg and an unknown, who was backed by local sporting men. At 2 o’clock Sunday morning a large crowd went to a barn, in which a ring was pitched to witness the battle.
The contestants shook hands and the fight began. Almost instantly after the unknown struck Fulljames a blow on the temple, which knocked him to the floor. He soon recovered, and staggering to his feet started to continue to fight. The men went at each other viciously, and Fulljames received several hand blows on the face.
Sunday Games of Base Ball Should Not be Played in Our City.
Most of our people do not approve of Sunday base ball games, and regard the action of the management of the club instituting Sunday games as reprehensible. It certainly is out of order, and the club will gain nothing permanently by such a departure from what the orthodox people would regards as right.
There is no standpoint from which this subject can be regarded that will justify this departure from obedience to the Divine injunction’ Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
Sunday games of base ball are suitable for every reason.
If the management concluded to play Sunday games becasue they hope to realize financial benefit out of it to enable them to meet pecuniary obligations the end will not justify the means there is no more justification for playing base ball on Sunday for the sake of earnings that may accrue, than their is for workmen to pursue avocations in the workshops for a similar purpose.
The home club arrived in this city yesterday afternoon from Cumberland where they played a series of three games. A news representative was told by Mr. J. Edward Doll, who had charge of the Frederick club, that their treatment in Cumberland by the members of the club and the people in general was first class. The bad treatment was received at the hands of a crowd of small boys and roughs whilst on the ball grounds A gentleman from Pittsburg, who won quite a sum of money on the game presented the Frederick boys with a box of fine cigars on Saturday night last.
The manager of the Shamokins is after Nusz, of the home team. Nusz sent him word last night that he would sign for $85 a month and expenses.
The Academy Base Ball Club left this morning for Woodsboro to cross bats with the team of that place. Railing and Volluse were the battery for the Academy team.
Mr. C. D. Doll has written to Dan Errick, the daisy first baseman, to meet him in Baltimore on Monday next on the arrival of the home team in that city in reference to signing with the Frederick team. An effort will be made to get the Past time club, of that city, here for the Fourth of July games at Association Park.
The game of base ball which was to have been okayed in Lierty yesterday, between a local team of that place and the Unionville club, did not come off owing to the Liberty club backing down. The reason assigned was that on the 2d day of this month the Liberty club visited Unionville, played a game and were defeated by a score 10 to 1.
