Dropped Dead in the Ring
April 29, 1889San Francisco, April 28.—Tom Avery a well-known local prize-fighter, fell late Friday night in the ring during a sparring exhibition with Ed Cuffe, a recent arrival from the East. It was a six-round contest and in the fourth round Avery fell unconscious to the floor, where he expired in a few minutes. A physician said death was due to heart failure, caused by over exertion. Cuffe was arrested.
