The tale of the lamb

Mary had a little lamb,
its fleece was white as snow;
and everywhere that Mary went,
friends asked- How came it so?
Some said it was the food it ate!
While others loud declared
The whiteness due to bleaching wash,
By chemist’s skill prepared.
But no one guessed the simple truth;
nor did she ever tell
The secret of the snowy fleece,
was found by washing well
