Shaw Stocking Co.'s Annual Meeting
May 26, 1888The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Shaw Stocking company was held at the office at the mill Monday. The report of the treasurer, Mr. Butler, showed the affairs to be in a satisfactory condition, a very good business having been done in the last half of the year. Manager Shaw, in response to some inquiries gave some interesting information concerning the company’s property in trademarks and patents and the methods pursued to defend it against encroachment. He also spoke of the present condition of the half-hose trade as affected by the unprecedented importation of German goods, with which the country is being flooded. The result on the low grade seamless goods is disastrous. The Shaw Knit, in consequence of their merit, will continue to be the favorite with the trade and the wearer. He said that there was no cloud over the company;s enterprise except the political-economic one. The shadow of that reseted on the company as well as on every other manufacturing establishment in the land for disaster could not come upon any one great national industry without affecting every other. The retiring board was re-elected. The fifteenth semi-annual dividend of three per cent was announced, payable Jan.1st.
