Shot Through The Heart.

An Officer Also Wounded, But Not Fatally. A Sanguine Encounter.

For some week complaints have been made to the office on this side of the river that thieves were stealing horses in Mexico and bringing to this side of the river. It was pretty nearly know that the stock was crossed but a few miles below this city near the Chacon Creek. It was decided to watch the river at this point in order to attempt to catch the thieves if possible. Accordingly Sheriff Sanchez detailed Deputies Charo and Lino to watch the river in that neighborhood and have been on duty there for more than a week past. This morning about 9 o’clock a man rode down the river and started to cross to Mexico. Nothing suspicious was noticed about him, but deputy Charo wished to ask him some questions, and called to him. Immediately upon being accosted he threw up his hand, which apparently had contained a drawn pistol as he came down the river, then fired at Charo. The ball struck him in the left leg, midway between the thigh and the knee. He fell to the ground and the stranger again fired at him, and his hat shows how near he came to being killed. The two deputies then each fired at the stranger. One ball struck him in the left nipple, passing through his body from left to right, and come out of his side, just below the right arm pit. The horse was struck in the fore leg above the knee. As they were both in the river a few feet they went down together in the shallow water. Word was immediately sent to this city, and Sheriff Sanchez with a physician left at once for the scene of the affray. In the afternoon the body of the dead man was brought to this city and also the wounded deputy. As yet no one knows anything of the stranger’s identity. He appears to have been a man about thirty years of age, and was roughly dressed. The horse he rode bore a Mexican brand.
